Deadline Extended for San Diego County Grand Jury Applications

The deadline to apply for the 2025-2026 San Diego County Grandy Jury has been extended to January 24, 2025. Dedicated residents with sound judgment from throughout the county are invited to apply. The Grand Jury investigates citizen complaints and performs its traditional function as a “watchdog” over government agencies. It does not conduct criminal investigations.

Notice is hereby given that unclaimed money on deposit with or held by the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, and money covered by unclaimed, undeliverable, returned and stale dated checks, that have been held in the court’s Trust and Operation Accounts for three years or more, excluding restitution to victims, will become the property of the San Diego Superior Court effective February 16, 2025, in accordance with Government Code Section 68084.1, unless a claim is filed as outlined below:

San Diego Superior Court Warns of Jury Duty Scams

The San Diego Superior Court is issuing a renewed warning about convincing scams trying to take advantage of members of the public.

In the most recent example, scammers call individuals stating that they failed to appear for jury duty and that they would be arrested. The individuals are instructed to report to official locations including courthouses or an address that was previously but is not currently a Superior Court location.

San Diego Resident to Lead the 2024-2025 San Diego County Civil Grand Jury

August 15, 2024

James Tuck was selected as the foreperson of the 2024-2025 San Diego County Grand Jury, which started service on July 1, 2024. 

Together with 18 other San Diego County residents, he represents the people of San Diego County in a watchdog role investigating governmental agencies and public entities within the county. 

Born in Durham, North Carolina, Tuck grew up throughout the United States as a military child. He now resides in Linda Vista.

Longest-Serving San Diego Superior Court Judge David M. Gill Retires

The Honorable David M. Gill, the longest-serving San Diego Superior Court judge, will formally retire after over 50 years on the bench. His official retirement date will be on his 90th birthday, December 13, 2024. He was appointed to the San Diego Municipal Court by Governor Ronald Reagan in 1974. In 1978, he ran for a seat on the Superior Court and logged a victory over two strong opponents. He was sworn into the Superior Court bench on January 8, 1979.

MyCitations: Ability to Pay Tool Unavailable Overnight on Wednesday, July 31

The MyCitations: Ability to Pay Tool will undergo scheduled maintenance from Wednesday, July 31 at 5:00 p.m. to Thursday, August 1 at 9:00 a.m. and will be temporarily unavailable.

This maintenance aims to enhance the MyCitations public site by introducing an updated landing page that includes options for Ability-to-Pay and Online Trial by Declaration.

San Diego Superior Court Computer Systems Affected by Mass IT Outage

July 19, 2024

Update: Due to the diligent work of the court’s IT team throughout the night and early this morning, most courtrooms were operational by 10 a.m., and the remaining few courtrooms should be working normally shortly. Many business offices are also operating normally, though with some minor related delays. All business offices are anticipated to be fully operational by noon today.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Kenneth J. Medel Retires

July 17, 2024

The Honorable Kenneth J. Medel recently retired from the San Diego Superior Court after 14 years of judicial service. Judge Medel first worked as a San Diego County Deputy District attorney from 1980 to 1987, the last two years in the newly formed and innovative Gang Prosecution Unit, handling violent felony crimes committed by street gang members. The 40 jury trials he completed at the D.A.’s office, including two murder trials, formed the foundation for his life in trial thereafter, both as an attorney and a judge.

Civil Case Management System Upgrade Largely Complete

July 9, 2024

The San Diego Superior Court’s case management system upgrade that took place throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend is largely complete. 

All impacts to Family, Juvenile Traffic, Probate, and Small Claims systems have been resolved and court business is being processed as normal for those case types.
